  • Decompressive hemicraniectomy

    A surgical procedure for the treatment of raised pressure inside the brain from fluid, blood or swelling. A piece of skull is removed to allow the brain to swell. 

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

    A blood clot that develops in the large veins, usually in the legs. 

  • Diabetes, diabetes mellitus

    A metabolic disease in which a person has high blood sugar. 

  • Diagnostic accuracy

    The degree to which a diagnostic (or screening) tool or procedure is able to distinguish between cases and non-cases. See also ‘sensitivity’ or ‘specificity’. 

  • Doppler ultrasound

    An imaging technique that measures blood flow and velocity through blood vessels. 

  • Dysarthria

    Difficulty producing clear speech, caused by muscle weakness.

  • Dyspepsia

    Indigestion.

  • Dysphagia

    Difficulty in swallowing.
